Meater Plus Review: Wireless Meat Thermometer Tested

The Meater line of wireless meat thermometers stands out among cooking thermometers for its sleek design, wireless convenience, and user-friendly app. The Meater Plus, in particular, represents a significant leap in probe thermometer design by combining a compact probe, a bamboo charging case, Bluetooth repeater functionality, and cloud features that let you monitor cooks from virtually anywhere.

With dual sensors for both internal meat temperature and ambient cooking temperature, a polished smartphone app, and thoughtful packaging, the Meater Plus delivers a simple, modern approach to monitoring barbecue and oven cooks. Below is a focused, practical overview based on hands-on testing and real cooks.

What we liked:

  • Intuitive smartphone app for iOS and Android
  • Fully wireless operation with Bluetooth repeater
  • Strong battery life in both probe and charging case
  • Dual sensors for internal meat and ambient temperature readings

What needs improvement:

  • Maximum internal temperature is limited to 212°F (100°C)
  • Initial charging time can be long
  • Official Bluetooth range is about 165 ft, which can be limited by obstacles

Look and Feel

Out of the box, the Meater Plus feels premium. The packaging is understated, and the thermometer ships in a small bamboo charging and storage case that protects the probe and houses its charging mechanism. The case is compact—roughly the size of a small remote—and stores the probe vertically with a clip that both secures and charges it.

The charging base includes a power/connection button and a single LED status light. The battery compartment uses a single AAA cell and closes with a magnetic cover rather than screws. Two magnets on the base let you attach the charger to a refrigerator or other magnetic surface for convenient storage—avoid placing the wooden base in or on hot cooking equipment.

Probe Design

The probe measures approximately 133 mm (about 5.25 inches) and is about 6 mm in diameter. Its shape tapers toward the tip and widens at the top to house the ambient temperature sensor. The probe is slightly thicker than some instant-read probes, but the extra diameter accommodates the electronics needed for fully wireless operation and the dual-sensor design. Compared to other wireless probes, the Meater Plus remains relatively slender.

Using the Meater Plus

We test thermometers in real cooking scenarios to evaluate usability, accuracy, and app quality. For this review we smoked a picanha, a flavorful sirloin-cap cut, treating it like a small brisket to test long, low-temperature smoke performance and the probe’s endurance.

Smoking with the Meater Plus

After preparing the picanha with a mustard binder and a simple salt-and-pepper rub, we placed it in a barrel smoker and monitored the cook using the Meater app. The probe’s dual sensors provided both internal meat temperature and ambient smoker temperature simultaneously, making it easy to follow the cook without opening the smoker frequently.

Setup and Charging

New units require an initial charge—about six hours—to reach full capacity. Remove the protective tab from the battery area to begin charging; the LED on the charging base turns green when charge is complete. Once charged, the probe is ready to pair with a smartphone.

Connecting the Meater App

The Meater app works with both iOS and Android. Enable Bluetooth on your phone, open the app, remove the probe from the case, and press the button on the base to enter pairing mode. The app detects nearby Meater devices and walks you through pairing and setup. The app’s guided cook feature suggests target temperatures and estimates remaining cook time using its internal algorithm.

Monitoring Temperatures

Insert the probe into the meat to the safety notch so the tip sits in the meat’s center while the top ambient sensor remains exposed. Once inside the smoker, the app displays internal and ambient temperatures concurrently, logs progress, and can trigger alarms when presets are reached. The interface is clean and practical, making it simple to check progress at a glance.

Bluetooth, Meater Link and Cloud

Measured Bluetooth range is about 165 feet in open line-of-sight conditions; walls and obstacles reduce that distance. In testing we reliably received readings from around the yard and inside the house when the line of sight was clear. To extend range further, enable the Meater Link feature to use the base as a Bluetooth repeater connected to local Wi-Fi, allowing monitoring from a second device. Using Meater Cloud, you can follow the cook remotely by leaving one device at the cook site and observing from another location.

Is the Meater Plus right for you?

The Meater Plus is an excellent choice if you want a single-probe, fully wireless thermometer with strong app integration and cloud capabilities. It excels at smoking and grilling where a simple, accurate monitoring system and long battery life are priorities. However, its single-probe design and 212°F internal temperature cap may limit uses where higher temperature readings or multi-probe monitoring are required. While additional probes can be linked to the repeater, the Meater ecosystem is best suited to cooks who prioritize convenience, wireless freedom, and a polished mobile experience over multi-probe commercial-style setups.

Overall, the Meater Plus marks a meaningful step forward in consumer wireless meat thermometers. It combines thoughtful hardware design, solid battery performance, and a capable app to make monitoring cooks easier and more reliable for home cooks and backyard pitmasters alike.
