Materials for owl cake:

Below is a practical materials list used for this design. You can substitute items you already have on hand.

  • Three-layer 6-inch cake (we used a white almond sour cream cake). Any dense cake that holds light carving will work; chilling or partial freezing makes carving easier.
  • Fluffy Vanilla Buttercream or Classic Vanilla Buttercream for frosting.
  • Owl cake templates for eyes and wings (printable).
  • Chocolate chips for eyes and beak (larger chips work well).
  • Ball tool for texturing (alternatives listed below).
  • Piping tips: large leaf tip #366 and round tip #4 (for small white eye dots).
  • White chocolate candy melts or white bark coating; candy coloring (we used a blue/grey tint).
  • Cake board cut to size.
  • Small paint brushes, piping gel (as edible glue), wax or parchment paper, serrated knife for carving.
  • White fondant for the hat, plus a small amount tinted with blue candy color.
  • Supports: two bubble tea straws or similar, cut to cake height (for hat support) and a lollipop stick.
  • Rice cereal treat bars (5 bars, 22g size) for shaping features.
  • Optional tools: FMM Multi Ribbon Cutter for pompom strips, fondant rolling pin, Americolor food coloring pen, vegetable shortening.

Notes for making the Owl Cake:

  • If you don’t have a ball tool for feather texture, use a small angled spatula, a spoon, or a piping tip to create a similar effect. You can also pipe small feathers with a small leaf tip.
  • We tinted white candy coating slightly with blue candy coloring to achieve a soft blue-grey tone. Avoid using regular gel food coloring in candy melts because it can thicken the coating; use candy coloring or pre-colored melts instead.
  • If larger chocolate chips are not available for the eyes and beak, you can shape those elements from buttercream or fondant.
  • The provided template includes extra eye pieces in case of breakage.
