PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE

Confession: pumpkin spice lattes make me especially happy this time of year. I look forward to crisp mornings, colorful leaves, baked apples, cider doughnuts and a warm pumpkin-spiced drink to sip while the air turns cool.

This easy pumpkin spice latte lives up to its name. It’s quick to prepare and uses only six ingredients you likely have on hand during fall: coffee, pumpkin puree, milk (or a milk alternative), pumpkin pie spice, vanilla extract and maple syrup (or another natural sweetener).

Simply combine the ingredients in a blender and blend until well combined and frothy. If you like, top the latte with whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice.

Making a pumpkin spice latte at home lets you control the ingredients and can save money compared with buying one at a coffee shop. One can of pumpkin puree goes a long way, and you can even make your own puree if you prefer.

I enjoy sitting down in the afternoon with a mug of pumpkin spice latte and a slice of pumpkin bread. Even when the weather shifts suddenly from warm to cold, a homemade pumpkin spice latte keeps the cozy season alive.

MODIFICATIONS FOR THIS PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE:

  • Milk options: Use any milk you prefer. Dairy, almond, coconut or other plant-based milks all work well and change the flavor and texture slightly.

  • Make your own pumpkin pie spice: If you don’t have store-bought spice, mix 4 tsp cinnamon, 2 tsp ginger, 1 tsp cloves and 1/2 tsp nutmeg. The recipe uses 1/2 tsp, so you’ll have leftovers for another use.

  • Sweeteners: Maple syrup is my favorite, but honey, agave or another natural sweetener can be used instead.
