Cold Brew with a Salted Maple Foam

I’ve always loved the combination of maple syrup and a pinch of sea salt in cold brew—the sweet-salty contrast pairs perfectly with coffee. When I started whipping the maple and salt into milk to create a light foam, it took the drink to a whole new level. The foam adds a creamy, slightly caramelized layer that elevates a simple cold brew into something memorable.

The recipe is simple and fast to make. If you have a milk frother, it’s ideal; I use an immersion blender attachment that includes a frother and it works wonderfully. If you don’t own a frother, a tightly sealed jar and a good shake will do the trick.

To froth without a tool: combine milk, maple syrup, and sea salt in a jar with a lid. Close it tightly and shake vigorously until foam forms. For more on this method, see the steamed milk notes below.

Ingredients

  • Cold brew coffee concentrate
  • Whole milk
  • 100% maple syrup
  • Pinch of sea salt

See the recipe card below for exact amounts and nutrition information.

To make your own cold brew concentrate at home, prepare a batch of steeped cold brew—this concentrate makes the best base for the drink.

Instructions

1. Fill a large glass with ice and pour in 1 cup cold brew coffee concentrate.

2. In a measuring cup, combine 1/4 cup whole milk, 2 teaspoons pure maple syrup, and a pinch of sea salt. Use a milk frother in an up-and-down motion until the mixture doubles in volume and becomes foamy.

3. Gently spoon the salted maple foam over the cold brew so the foam rests on top. If you don’t have a frother, put the milk, syrup, and salt in a jar with a tight lid and shake vigorously until foam forms, then pour over the coffee.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cold brew coffee concentrate
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons 100% maple syrup
  • pinch of sea salt

Instructions

  1. Add cold brew coffee to a large glass with ice.
  2. In a measuring cup add the milk, maple syrup, and salt. Use a milk frother in an up-and-down motion to mix and create foam. Once the foam is about double the milk, carefully pour it on top of the coffee using a spoon to guide the foam.
  3. If you don’t have a milk frother, combine the milk, maple syrup, and salt in a jar with a tight lid. Shake vigorously until foam forms, then pour over the coffee.

Notes

Whole milk creates the creamiest, most stable foam due to its higher fat content. Other milks will work but may produce different texture and foam stability.
