If you’re a quilter or fiber artist, you’ve likely heard of the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show — and if not, it’s worth discovering. With more than 1,300 quilts on display, the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show (SOQS) is globally recognized as the largest outdoor quilt show and sale in the world, and one of the longest-running. In 2018 the SOQS celebrated its 43rd year.
Each year the small town of Sisters, Oregon (population roughly 2,500) swells to accommodate more than 10,000 visitors. Attendees come from all 50 states and dozens of countries to admire quilts showcased throughout the town’s streets and public spaces.
This was my fifth visit to SOQS, and I keep returning because it’s a singular experience. Seeing quilts displayed outdoors in the bright Central Oregon sunlight makes colors sing in a way they rarely do indoors. With many streets closed to traffic during the show, there’s room to breathe, wander, and really take in the quilts without the cramped aisles typical of convention-center shows.
Another unusual and welcome feature: the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show is free to the public. It’s also brief — only one day a year, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the second Saturday in July — which makes planning important if you want to see as much as possible.
To help you make the most of that single day, here’s a “One Perfect Day at the Sisters Quilt Show” plan — useful whether you’re planning a future trip or enjoying the photos vicariously.
BEFORE YOU GO
Start planning early, especially if you need lodging. Hotels and inns in Sisters fill quickly for the quilt show, so book as soon as you can. If accommodations in Sisters are unavailable, consider nearby Bend or Redmond. Central Oregon is popular for camping, so tent or RV camping is an option — but campsites also fill early.
Although the outdoor show is one day, the week before includes classes, workshops, and special events. If you want to take classes, register well in advance. Also keep in mind that moving 10,000+ visitors into a small town takes logistics — arrive early on show day and allow extra time for parking and walking to the display areas.
With those basics handled, let’s head to the show.
ONE PERFECT DAY AT THE SISTERS QUILT SHOW
Morning
If you’re staying in Sisters or are an early riser, aim to arrive in town by about 7:30 a.m. Find parking and walk downtown to The Stitchin’ Post, Sisters’ iconic quilt shop. On show morning you may catch volunteers and local firefighters hanging quilts on the shop exterior — a fascinating and speedy transformation as volunteers display well over a thousand quilts across town.
Fuel up for the day with breakfast at a local bakery — a muffin, scone, and a latte will set you up for hours of walking and viewing. The morning hours are often the most pleasant temperature-wise; Central Oregon heats up quickly, so enjoy the quilts outdoors while it’s cool and remember to drink plenty of water as the day warms.
Stroll the streets and take your time admiring quilts hung everywhere — on storefronts, fences, and public buildings. Visitors are asked not to touch the quilts, but volunteers are usually nearby and happy to show the backs and offer details about construction and materials.
Many quilts are for sale; ribbons on displays indicate availability and asking prices, so if a piece catches your eye you may have an opportunity to buy it.

Afternoon
When lunchtime arrives, embrace Sisters’ frontier-town character and enjoy a hearty meal. Several local eateries offer quilt-show-friendly fare and buffet options on the big day. After lunch, browse the town’s western and specialty shops — whether you’re after boots, unique clothing, or handcrafted items, Sisters has a charming shopping scene.

Spend the warmer afternoon hours inside where exhibits are on display in municipal buildings. The library and city hall often host special indoor quilt exhibits that are air-conditioned and offer a different viewing experience. Stop by The Stitchin’ Post to satisfy any fabric cravings that the outdoor displays inspired — it’s a perfect place to pick up supplies or simply admire more textile artistry.

Another delightful stop is the town bookstore, where local authors sometimes appear for signings. If you time your visit well, you might catch an author event or book signing while you rest and recharge.

As the afternoon winds down, take one last circuit around town to view any quilts you missed. At 4 p.m. the show concludes, and volunteers quickly remove quilts so streets can reopen to traffic.
For a relaxing end to a full day, reserve a table at a local wine bar or restaurant with outdoor seating. Sit in a garden setting, enjoy a glass of wine or a light meal, and reflect on the artistry you’ve seen. It’s a lovely way to wrap up a perfect day in Sisters, Oregon.

Whether you’re a quilter, a fiber art enthusiast, or someone who simply appreciates creativity and community, the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show is an unforgettable celebration of color, skill, and small-town charm. Plan ahead, pace yourself, and enjoy every stitch and display you encounter.
