One of my all-time favourite desserts is chocolate mousse. This Low Carb Chocolate Mousse is straightforward to make and uses basic ingredients you likely already have in your fridge, which makes the recipe both convenient and satisfying.

I have to admit I have a very bad sweet tooth and I truly love chocolate. This mousse is one of my go-to sweet treats while keeping carbs low. It combines a base of whipped cream cheese with heavy whipping cream to create a light but rich texture. The result is a dessert that feels indulgent while fitting into a lower-carbohydrate plan.
What is Chocolate Mousse Made Of?
Traditional chocolate mousse is often made with whipped egg whites, whipped cream, or a combination of the two, and it is commonly flavoured with ingredients such as vanilla, coffee, mint, or spices. For this low-carb version, cream cheese and heavy whipping cream replace the need for eggs while still producing a fluffy, creamy texture. Cocoa and a small amount of instant coffee deepen the chocolate flavour without adding sugar, and a low-carb sweetener keeps the dessert suitable for reduced-carb diets.
How Long Does Chocolate Mousse Last?
Stored in an airtight container, this chocolate mousse will keep in the refrigerator for up to four days. For the best texture and flavour, enjoy it within two days. Chilling helps the mousse set and allows flavours to meld, but prolonged storage can slightly change the texture as the dairy continues to settle.
This Low Carb Chocolate Mousse is now my favourite for two practical reasons: first, it uses simple, familiar ingredients; second, it takes about five minutes of active prep. The recipe below yields two small servings, though because it is quite rich you may prefer to divide it into three smaller portions. You can easily double the ingredients to make enough for several days or for more guests.
Here are a few serving and storage tips to get the most from this dessert:
- Chill the mousse for at least 30 minutes before serving for a firmer texture and improved flavour melding.
- If you prefer a slightly lighter finish, garnish with a small dollop of additional whipped cream or a sprinkle of unsweetened cocoa powder just before serving.
- Use full-fat cream cheese and heavy whipping cream for the creamiest result; lower-fat substitutes may change texture and flavour.
- If you want a deeper chocolate taste, increase the cocoa by a teaspoon or add a drop more instant coffee, tasting as you go to avoid bitterness.
- For a different sweetness profile, substitute your preferred powdered low-carb sweetener equivalent to the amount listed.
Happy low-carbing and enjoy this simple, elegant chocolate mousse whenever you want a quick, satisfying dessert.

Low Carb Chocolate Mousse
This sweet low carb chocolate mousse is perfectly portioned for two and takes only minutes to prepare.
- Prep Time
- 10 minutes

- Dessert
- Cuisine
- American
- Servings
- 2 (or 3 small portions)
- Author
- Karami Urbanoski
Ingredients
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1/2 pkg cream cheese (about 4 oz)
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 tsp instant coffee
- 1 pinch salt
- 4 packets Splenda or about 4 tsp powdered low-carb sweetener equivalent
Instructions
- In a deep bowl, whip the cream cheese until smooth and fluffy.
- Add the heavy whipping cream, vanilla, cocoa powder, instant coffee and a pinch of salt to the cream cheese. Begin whipping on low for about 30 seconds to combine the ingredients.
- Increase speed and whip everything together for about 2 minutes until the mixture is light and fluffy. Taste and adjust sweetener if desired.
- Spoon the mousse into 2–3 small serving containers. If you like, top with a small swirl of whipped cream or a dusting of cocoa powder.
- Refrigerate until ready to serve. The mousse keeps its texture best when chilled and served within a couple of days.
- Notes: Whipping the cream separately before folding it in did not noticeably improve fluffiness in testing. A stand mixer with a wire whisk produced a slightly airier texture than handheld beaters, though both methods work well.
